Agoraphobia Treatment
I had a pretty normal adolescence, and assumed I would have a pretty normal adulthood. I never had any mental illnesses or severe insecurities. I certainly never had anxiety and panic attacks are agoraphobia problems. Nonetheless, sometime in my 30s it all went downhill. I began to be afraid of being around people. At first, I couldn’t stand large crowds. After a while, however, even relatively small crowds would scare me. Soon, I was afraid to even leave the house. I was on the verge of becoming a complete shut in, and I knew that something had to be done. That is when I decided to sign up for agoraphobia treatment.
I was not entirely unaware of how treatments for mental illnesses worked. My mother was a bit acrophobic, and she told me all about the treatment she received when she finally became tired of not being able to be anywhere up high. Back then, psychotherapy was the standard treatment for pretty much anything. Basically, her therapist analyzed her condition from beginning to end, tracing its development and that psychological causes. Although this worked well for my mother, I felt that a more modern approach would be better for me. I wasn’t particularly concerned with analysis ? I just wanted my problem to go away. I figured that, through desensitization and hypnosis agoraphobia treatment, I could affect a full recovery.
Agoraphobia treatments can be difficult for some people because they often involve leaving the house. If you are severely agoraphobic enough, you will not be able to leave the house without having panic attacks. Fortunately, it hadn’t been that bad for me. I started going to my agoraphobia treatment right away, and didn’t seem to have too much trouble getting there.
It was good that I took my agoraphobia treatment at an office right around the corner from my house. I live in a pretty secluded part of the city, so I rarely have to be around very big crowds. If I had had to cross Main Street, however, it would have been very difficult for me to get the treatment without an attack of agoraphobia. As it was, it was still pretty scary to leave the house. I knew things had gotten bad when I had to psych myself up just to get myself to go a block away for treatment.
Surprisingly, the first thing that the therapist tried for agoraphobia treatment was meditation. He explained to me that being able to calm myself would be a great asset when I was undergoing treatment. Once I mastered the basics of meditation, he moved on to more advanced techniques. He used hypnosis to lay the groundwork, and then began to desensitize me to crowds. So far, it seems to be working.
