Munchausen By Proxy
Those of us who are parents know how much a child matters to us. When you have a kid, that kid immediately becomes the center of your world. Nothing is more important ? nothing. That is why Munchausen by proxy hold such a morbid fascination for so many people.
Munchausen syndrome by proxy, in case you are not yet familiar with , is a psychological condition that causes caretakers to make their children ill. They do this for a variety of different reasons. The Munchausen by proxy is often motivated by a desire for attention and sympathy from other, but it can also involve pursuit of financial gain and renumeration. Some Munchausen by proxy patients even do because they enjoy the notoriety. They want to be remembered not just as a caring mother or father with a sick child, but as a famous figure once they are unmasked.
Munchausen by proxy cases are actually relatively rare, but there have been more than they should. When they do, is usually all over the media. I recently read about a Munchausen by proxy case involving a girl who was so sick because of parental tampering with her medication and out and out poisoning that she actually had a benefit given to her every year. People would donate thousands of dollars to help her with her medical expenses, believing that she was the victim of an unkind fate. Eventually, her mother got so crazy that she killed the child. It shocked and appalled people deeply, and made a huge impact on the community.
Although Munchausen by proxy cases are generally not quite that dramatic in their outcome, they do happen more often than they should. People in the community often look the other way because the reality can be almost too difficult to comprehend. People do not get the right training in recognizing the signs, and so many cases can slip by the attention of concerned family and friends, public health workers, and even the police. Because there are not very many trained psychiatrists out there monitoring the community, few people know what to look for. By educating yourself about Munchausen by proxy, you can help make a difference. You may never come across it, but if you do it is important to know what you are looking at. Otherwise, the life of another child may be lost to this devastating and extremely terrible mental illness.
