There are facilities established all over the world helping women learn about birth control. The common type of birth control is still “the pill”?or the combined oral contraceptive pill. It has been around since 1960 and though is still the same in terms of its main function, now offers additional features such as help with acne, lighter and fewer periods depending on the brand used.
There are other methods women should research when learning about birth control. Another hormonal method is shots or Depo-Provera. This is injected every three months and is considered highly affective.
The skin patch is another highly favored method of birth control. The first skin patch was released in 2001. The patch lets out hormones that go through the skin and into the blood. The patch is 98% effective.
When learning about birth control, the vaginal ring should be considered. The ring is inserted into the vagina and easily removed. Drugs are released when appropriate to prevent pregnancy.
Intrauterine devices, or IUD, were introduced in 1970 and referred to as a long-term birth control method. The varying IUDs can last from five to ten years. The device works to destroy sperm, preventing it from entering the uterus. It is inserted by a doctor and maybe checked from time to time to make sure its secure in place.
Other forms of birth control are called barrier methods. These include female condoms, or diaphragms, that a woman needs to be fitted for before using. There are flat, coil and spring diaphragms available. It is placed over the diaphragm and stays put by the muscles. It is important to practice inserting it before needing to use it.
Natural family planning is a method approved by the Roman Catholic Church. This method doesn’t use any contraception, but does use abstinence or natural infertility.
